Green Workspaces: Sustainable Practices in High Point
The City of High Point is one of the fastest-growing communities in the Triad area. As a bustling hub of innovation and growth, it’s important that the city expand sustainably to best serve both the community and environment. Fortunately, sustainable practices are being built into nearly every aspect of High Point, NC. Here are some of the ways High Point is addressing and promoting sustainability.
High Point’s Sustainable Practices and Programs
From community education to planning for the High Point of tomorrow, there are several programs and processes in place to ensure sustainable practices are employed in High Point’s rapid development. Some of the main areas of focus for the city include:
-
Environment
The city provides a robust recycling and solid waste outreach program to educate the community on the importance of these practices. Keep High Point Beautiful is another crucial project that addresses littering and flower planting, including teaching gardens. Urban agriculture is an important undertaking to educate the community on how to address environmental concerns.
-
Economy
The High Point Economic Development Corporation works to retain existing businesses and industry in the city by assisting local companies in their expansion. They also help attract new businesses and show the benefits of locating in High Point. Another key initiative is to encourage creating head-of-household jobs throughout the Triad area.
-
Equity
Equity ensures everyone has the same access to basic needs, which provides important opportunities. The Community Development and Housing Department provides a variety of services, including affordable housing, neighborhood improvement and community capacity-building. High Point’s Public Library also provides free resources and programs to engage with the needs of the community.
-
Transportation
With transportation, it’s critical that sustainable practices are put in place. The Metropolitan Planning Organization helps address transportation planning from a sustainable perspective, and the High Point Greenway Master Plan incorporates the need for both transportation and greenspaces. This ensures that residents can have safe transportation options that are environmentally friendly.
-
Green Workspaces
Green workspaces help bring more employees to the area while remaining environmentally conscious. High Point had previously lacked an area to collaborate, work and relax in one common spot. Fortunately, Business High Point-Chamber of Commerce has renovated and transformed the historic Adams-Mills Hosiery Mill into Congdon Yards — an exciting new initiative in the heart of the High Point community.
